Hudson County Hunger Project (HCHP) is a meal delivery program that began  in response to the coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic. The program began after a conversation between Mory Thomas, co-owner of Square 1 Community Eatery and Dr. Leeja Carter, Jersey City resident and a regular at Square 1. The two began discussing the impact of the new social distancing policies on community residents and small business owners and its impact on the community's eldest, homeless, and disabled. Partnering up with Thomas’ Square 1 eatery, Dr. Carter quickly called together a team of students, friends, and Alumni to create a program that would address this need. This taskforce quickly turned into a team of 10 meeting virtually to discuss program coordination, mobilization, and logistics. Thus, our meal program was born.

The Hudson County Hunger Project officially launched March 31, 2020 and has since delivered upwards of 2000 meals and counting. What began as a conversation between two became a meal program that would package and deliver five wholesome meals a week to Hudson County's most vulnerable population affected by the pandemic.

Funded by generous donations, the program provides meals to senior citizens, homeless persons, and persons with disabilities. To date, HCHP has  expanded into many departments overseeing production, fundraising, social media, and research/data collection. El Gordo, another community restaurant, quickly came  on board and joined in preparing free meal boxes for program enrollees. HCHP has received countless positive reviews and is quickly growing in number of recipients and partnering restaurants. Also supported by the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services, we are proud to be providing delicious meal boxes and helping in any way we can to those in need.
